The SwitchLug is a revolutionary new product that affords shooters greatly increased versatility for their rifle systems. Simply put, this patent pending design gives multi-barrel, multi caliber capability to a rifle system that can be changed by the user with only one tool.
Many precision rifle competitors have built “trainer” rifles, usually chambered for a less expensive or more easily obtainable cartridge, to hone their positional and fundamental shooting skills. This allows them to keep the round count down on their actual match gun and prolong the life of a good barrel. With the SwitchLug, a second rifle is no longer necessary. You can simply have a second barrel chambered in your desired training cartridge and shoot it while prepping for matches (you’ll probably need a spare bolt and mag for .223 Remington of course). But instead of having to learn two separate rifles, you can now train with your actual match gun which means you get better behind the actual stock/chassis and optic that you will be running on game day.
Additionally, having a spare barrel available as your current tube runs out of life is made easier. Just have your spare barrel built, break it in and confirm your load and zero, then keep it on hand for a quick swap out if needed. No barrel vises or action wrenches are required, and complete disassembly of the rifle is not required. The action and SwitchLug remain installed in the rifle’s stock or chassis during barrel changes. The only tool required is an inch-pound torque wrench, to loosen and re-torque the lug clamp screw.
Hunters benefit from the SwitchLug system as well. One rifle can be configured for multiple requirements; for example a flat shooting .28 Nosler can be built for a plains game hunt, but with a simple barrel swap can be turned into a .375 H&H for dangerous game use. Or, your lightweight 7mm08 deer stalking rifle can have a spare 22LRV barrel for long distance coyote hunting in the off season. As in the case of the competitor’s training rifle, the hunter can now gain confidence and ability by using the same rifle throughout different seasons, rather than having to learn a second rifle.
Design Features: The SwitchLug was designed for our Claymore and Claymore HD series actions, but is adaptable to many other custom actions that use a single or double pinned recoil lug system with the lug pin holes located .600″ from the barrel thread shank centerline. The system can also be retrofitted to the Remington 700 actions, for shooters planning to build a new rifle from donor or existing action. Remington actions must be fully trued to function properly with the SwitchLug. In addition to added versatility, this system allows a shooter to easily inspect and clean the bolt lug recesses of the rifle action. Constructed from 17-4 PH Stainless Steel material, the part does not require coating for corrosion resistance and is equally at home on a natural stainless finish rifle build.
Accuracy and Repeatability: Over 1200 rounds have been fired to date through multiple test rifles during product development, and no discernable accuracy difference has been found between rifles running the SwitchLug system with a properly fitted barrel and test rifles using a standard recoil lug interface. We tested point-of-impact repeatability by shooting 5 shot or larger groups at 100 yards, and removing and re-torqueing the barrel between every single shot. POI repeatability has proven to consistently return within +/- .5MOA, and in many cases significantly less. As a matter of course we recommend always confirming your zero after a barrel change, but you can be confident in the ability of a rifle with a properly installed Switchlug system to hold its zero and return to it.
Suitable stocks and chassis systems: The SwitchLug interfaces with a rifle stock in the same way as a standard recoil lug. For the system to function with maximum repeatability, the lug and action should be properly bedded into the stock. This immobilizes the lug during barrel changes when the clamp is loosened for barrel removal or installation. If ordering a new stock for use with this product, order with an oversize recoil lug pocket as the SwitchLug is .350″ thick. Chassis systems that do not obstruct the area around the recoil lug can also be used. Again, for maximum repeatability we recommend bedding the lug pocket and front action ring area with Devcon epoxy. If you choose not to bed your chassis the SwitchLug will work, but you will likely experience a shift in POI on your first 2-3 shots after a barrel installation as the action and lug settle.
