Alaska just keeps on giving! We built a super slick #switchlug rig for great client about three years ago in 6.5 PRC, 300PRC, and .375 Ruger, and he hammered an absolute brute of a bull with it this season on an unforgettable trip. It was pretty awesome to go back through our grid and see it freshly built in July 2022, and now see this rifle out there on a dream hunt still making memories.

First batch of Clovis Precision Sabertooth cans have arrived in house! We’ve been quietly testing on these for over a year now, and they are absolutely awesome. 6” OAL(7+ with the brake endcap), .33 cal and rated up to Norma Mags at 22” barrel length, and just under 11 ounces including the self timing brake endcap. There are lots of good cans out right now, but it’s the details on these that set them apart.

Initial load work with the 155 Terminal Ascent in

Initial load work with the 155 Terminal Ascent in the 7mm SAW is 👌. Pic 1 is the initial 10 shots using Vihtavuori Powders N150, our factory brass made by Alpha Munitions, and CCI450 primers. This is 4 different charge weights, starting at 41.6gr and ending at 42.8gr, of which only one shot was fired and gave the first indication of nearing pressure. It is the only shot not touching the rest. Test barrel was a 26” Bartlein Barrels, Inc Medium Palma with about 40 rounds on it. 42.0gr gave 2815FPS/5.5SD and literally shot the center of the group.

Pic 2 is the first three shots with 42.0gr N150 on a 22” Paradigm Carbon blank cut with our SAW II reamer that’s been my hog, aoudad and elk smasher for about 5 years. No idea of the round count on it but it was original carbon fiber heat test barrel from them. MV on the short barrel was 2739FPS/5.7SD. We took this load out to 820 yards this morning and 3 shots from a cold bore/cold suppressor went just inside of 4”. I’d like to see a touch more velocity from the short barrel and we plan to test further on several other powders, but as is I’d happily take it up the mountain this fall.

R&D this week on 7mm SAW loads with the 165gr @sierra_bullets Gamechanger and it does not disappoint. @vihtavuori_powders N150 and N540 are standouts, producing consistent .5MOA or less groups and SD’s under 10FPS. Next, we’ll run a multi-barrel test on the established loads to check real world velocities across common SAW barrel lengths.

The 7mm SAW doing what it does best way up north in Alaska! We finished this build out early in June, and the owner put it right to work this season on a great Caribou bull. When you are looking for all around versatility, #7mmSAW is tough to beat:

Not sure who needs to hear this today, but you probably need a .223 bolt gun in your life. We built this Impact 737R in 6 Creed a while back for a great customer, and fitted it with our #switchlug during the initial build out. With a barrel swap and a fresh bolt to accommodate the smaller case head, training just got way more fun and affordable. This was one of our primary reasons for designing the SwitchLug originally, and we still love to see it accomplishing the purpose every day.

Mounting up a new @swarovskioptik_hunting Z5i+ 3.5-18x50 in a set of Hawkins 30mm Ultralight Tactical rings on a Caprock 7mm SAW build. The Z5+ series has become one of our favorite all around hunting optics, combining top optical quality with intuitive features and ease of use. A personal favorite is the simple locking ballistic turret system, which is great when packing or carrying your rifle somewhere that the turret could accidentally get bumped. The turret system is a dual turn unit with the reset tool stored on board and 40 MOA travel from a hard zero stop once set. That gets even short barreled rigs or lower velocity cartridges all the elevation needed for practical shooting.

These were running 3280FPS from a 22” @bartleinbarrelsinc CFW tube, and we’ve been able to safely achieve 3350+ in 24” barrel lengths. That vapor trail never gets old🔥🔥🔥
